Junior Camp Counselors

Audubon Counselor-in-Training (CIT) alumni, teens who were enrolled in other camp CIT programs, or those with comparable experience may apply to become a volunteer Audubon Junior Camp Counselor. These junior counselors work closely with Audubon staff and current counselors as they learn more about the workings of summer camp.

Teens aged 15 and up with camp experience are welcome to apply. Applicants should demonstrate maturity, work well as a part of a team, show leadership potential, and a desire to learn more about the world of environmental education. Junior Counselors will be asked to run select camp activities, assist with games, camper safety and well-being, and morning and afternoon transition times. They will receive direction, coaching, and support in their role, and will meet with camp directors each week.

Note that Junior Counselors are volunteer positions and are eligible for a small stipend and school internship credit.*

Counselors in Training

The Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program is designed for campers, ages 13 to 15, who aren’t quite ready to leave the camp experience behind and have an interest in becoming a camp counselor. This program is open to teens who have attended Audubon camps or other camps, and have a keen interest in science, nature, and being outdoors. Audubon’s CIT program provides opportunities for youth to strengthen leadership skills while they participate in daily camp activities.

CITs play the role of camper buddies for younger children. They help Audubon’s youngest campers feel comfortable, help children make friends, and most of all have fun! CITs will participate in regular camp activities but will also observe and learn from their counselors. They will keep a weekly journal and receive mentorship and feedback from their counselors and camp directors.

Once an experienced CIT turns 15 years old, they are welcome to apply to Audubon’s Junior Counselor Program, the next level that prepares teens to become camp counselors/instructors.

If your child is interested in being a Counselor-In-Training, please fill out the online application.

Cost: $200 per week (maximum of 3 weeks; limited spots available); 50% and 85% scholarships available.

CITs positions are available at Audubon camp locations in Seekonk, MA and Bristol, RI.

Generous scholarships are available to offset the cost of the CIT program.
Please be sure to submit that application as well!
